Upon arriving in Morocco, everything might seem overwhelming due to the cultural differences, but the truth is that Morocco is an excellent country to visit, and with a little information about it, you'll feel more like a local than a tourist. In this article, you'll find useful information to help you prepare for your trip and answers to the typical questions we all ask ourselves beforehand. Travel to Morocco.
The appropriate luggage for Travel to Morocco It will depend on the time of year and the area you choose for your trip. It's advisable to pack comfortable, lightweight clothing and breathable shoes. It's also recommended to bring a hat or other head covering to protect yourself from the sun. Keep in mind that Morocco is a Muslim country, and while everyone dresses as they please, it's always wise to dress modestly and respect local customs, especially if you plan to visit religious sites or rural areas where the locals aren't used to seeing women in short or tight clothing. Those traveling to the desert should bring closed, breathable shoes, a scarf to cover their face, sunglasses, and a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings.
Morocco is one of the African countries with the lowest health risks. However, medical treatment in the country can be expensive. You can find private doctors and clinics in every city, and most of these clinics have agreements with travel insurance companies. Therefore, purchasing travel insurance can be a very worthwhile option to avoid potential headaches. If you become ill or have an accident in Morocco and require hospitalization, it is advisable to contact the embassy or a consulate.
It's always a good idea to bring some basic medications in case of any problems during your trip. Remember to pack antibiotics, rubbing alcohol, aspirin, and anti-diarrheal medication. Sunscreen and insect bite treatment are also recommended. Pharmacies are easy to find in Morocco, but the high prices and the fact that medications may be marketed differently, which can be confusing since they come from French laboratories, can be a problem.
No vaccine is needed for Travel to Morocco Since it is not a high-risk country, but if you wish to travel more safely, the following vaccines are recommended:
For your peace of mind, it is very important to take out insurance. Trip to Morocco. We strongly recommend that all our visitors purchase travel insurance before arriving in Morocco. Travel insurance can protect against lost luggage, missed transportation, medical emergencies (including evacuation costs), trip cancellation, and trip interruption. Families traveling together, in particular, can benefit from joint travel insurance. Due to the high cost of the trip and the increased risk of illness for any member of the group, the trip could be canceled, and without insurance, the money invested could be lost. It's affordable and allows for much greater peace of mind while traveling.
On the other hand, if you head to the beaches, you should be especially careful on the Atlantic coast, as they often have waves and strong currents. If you decide to go for a swim, do so with caution. During the summer months, there are usually lifeguards on the most popular tourist beaches in the country.
If you're going to drive in Morocco, you need to be very careful and always respect the speed limit. There are many police officers on the roads, but the most important thing is that people and animals often cross the road, even on highways, and it's reckless to drive fast. You also need to be very careful on curves, as Moroccans have the bad habit of overtaking on any side of the road.
The official currency in Morocco is the Dirham (MAD). Although its value fluctuates, to get a rough idea of the exchange rate in euros, you should divide the price in Dirhams by 10. This is just an approximation; for the exact value, I advise you to check the official exchange rate at the time of purchase. In almost all of Morocco, you won't have any problem paying in Euros, although it's always advisable to exchange at least some of your money into the local currency, especially for small payments and purchases. Ideally, you should calculate your expenses and only exchange what you need, as the reverse exchange rate is not as favorable. Before leaving the country, it's advisable to exchange all your money, as it can be complicated to exchange Dirhams for your home currency. You'll find exchange offices at all airports and ports in the country, at the borders of Ceuta and Melilla, and in almost all developed cities in Morocco. It's also possible to withdraw local currency from ATMs at local banks, but keep in mind that you'll likely be charged a fee by both your bank for the foreign transaction (around 51 TP3T) and the Moroccan bank for processing it. Card payments are accepted at most accommodations and restaurants of a certain category, as well as some shops, but these payments may incur a fee. It's also advisable to carry small coins of 1, 2, and even 5 DH for tips, as these are not included in the prices and tipping is customary.
If you need up-to-date information about the country, you can contact the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), which has offices throughout Morocco and abroad. In all cities of tourist interest, you can find an office where you can request information or tourist brochures.
In Spain, the tourist office is located in:
C/ Ventura Rodríguez 24, 1 Izquierda, Telephone 91 542 74 31 / 91 541 29 95.
C/ Balmes, 89, pl.3, loc.48. Telephone 93 453 20 38
Visit the website of the Moroccan national tourism office
Electricity in Morocco is 220V, and the plugs are the continental type, just like in Spain. In rural areas, 110V, 115V, and 125V are still available, but these are becoming less common. Accommodation rooms in Morocco (hotels and riads) typically have only one outlet, so if you want to charge more than one device at a time, we recommend packing a power strip or surge protector.
In Morocco, due to its culture, most of the population consists of large families with close contact with children. If you have children and are thinking Travel to Morocco With them, you'll surely be amazed by the lively streets, the oases hidden among the magnificent dunes, the smells and colors of the souks, and the friendliness of the Moroccan people. You'll also be captivated by horse-drawn carriage rides through the cities, camel treks, and the incredible beaches. On the other hand, there are some challenges to consider when traveling with children or babies. Any products like special foods and medications should be brought from home, as they can be difficult to find in Morocco. Don't expect to find baby changing facilities either, as they are practically nonexistent. The medinas can be labyrinthine and chaotic places where your children are likely to become disoriented or lost. Therefore, if you're traveling with children, you should keep them under close supervision or look for hotel or resort accommodations in the modern part of the city, where the narrow alleyways open up into wide avenues, just like in the West. If you want to buy baby products, we recommend visiting large stores such as Above y Marjane, These are large supermarkets like the ones you can find anywhere in the West, and they are a good place to stock up on baby products.
In a law passed in 2008, Morocco banned smoking in all enclosed public spaces and on public transportation, as well as prohibiting the sale of cigarettes to minors under 18. Smoking is permitted on restaurant and cafe terraces and in open areas. Many cafes and other establishments allow smoking inside their premises, so it's always best to ask the waiter if smoking is allowed, except in areas where signs clearly indicate it is prohibited.
Regardless of whether it is allowed or not, smoking near families who are eating is frowned upon; as a matter of courtesy, we should avoid smoking near them and only do so when we are sure we are not bothering anyone.
During Ramadan, Muslims are prohibited from smoking during the day, so it is advisable out of respect and courtesy to be discreet and not smoke in public places.
Alcohol is prohibited in Islam, and its sale in Morocco is limited to licensed establishments. Some restaurants, nightclubs, and hotels with this license may serve alcohol, but at a much higher price than what we are used to.
Internet is available in almost every city in Morocco. If you want to have internet on your mobile phone, you can buy a SIM card with a Moroccan number during your stay. For about 30 dh, you can have your Moroccan number and enjoy 20 dh of free top-up. Data rates are also cheap.
Depending on the region of Morocco, different languages are spoken. The official languages are Arabic and French, the latter being used for all administrative purposes. Colloquially, Darija, a dialect of Arabic, is spoken in Moroccan cities. Darija also varies depending on the region. In northern Morocco, a large part of the population still speaks Spanish due to the influence of the Spanish protectorate. The same is true in the south, but with French, as it was part of the French protectorate. English is spoken in some hotels and tourist towns. Moroccans are very multilingual, and it's surprising to see how they handle so many languages; even young children in the medina can manage to speak phrases and words in multiple languages.
When many people think of Morocco, the image that comes to mind is the desert, palm trees, and heat. While this is true in some parts of the country, the landscape is very different in others. Morocco is a very large country and, as such, has diverse climates.
The best times to Travel to Morocco Spring and autumn are undoubtedly the best times, as the weather is much milder during these months.

We traveled as a family, taking the 5-day desert tour. Our guide, Said, was more than just a driver-guide; he took great care of us, was incredibly attentive to detail, and a fantastic driver. He listened to all our requests and showed us many unforgettable places. A true professional and an even better person. Thank you, Said! As for the agency, we are incredibly grateful to Mila for her hospitality and recommendations.Published on Google![]()

A group of friends and I took the 5-day desert tour, and this experience will stay with me forever... everything was wonderful. From my first contact with Mila when making the reservation, she was in touch with me, acting as the group's spokesperson, long before the trip even started, answering all my questions and more! The organization was absolutely perfect, the hotels were generally very good, and a special mention goes to the Nomad Desert Hotel, which was truly beautiful, as was the Berber tent camp. The breakfast and dinner, which were included in the price, were very good, and thanks to the excellent advice and attention of our guide, Mohamed, the lunch, which wasn't included, was also perfect. Mohamed deserves a special mention in my comments, as he made the trip so much fun and we felt like family. He's a very endearing person and incredibly knowledgeable about his region, so his explanations were fascinating. Thanks to him, we were able to better understand the way of life of the desert people. Everything we saw was breathtaking. Although the journey to the desert from Marrakech is quite long and includes stretches of winding mountain road (the road is very good and new, so don't worry), Mohamed made it seem much shorter. He's a fantastic driver. As he says, if you learn to drive on the dunes, everything else is easy. I encourage anyone wanting to visit the Moroccan desert to book with them. You'll return home, just like we did, wanting to do it again. Thank you so much, Mohamed, Mila, and Ismail, for making this possible. Mohamed!! Hugs, my friend!Published on TripAdvisor![]()

We are a group of seven friends who just returned from this wonderful desert trip. We took a five-day tour. It was a unique and unforgettable experience with Mohammed, our guide, who was always friendly, always providing timely, concise, and clear explanations. He answered any questions we had and was always willing to help. He is also an excellent driver. The hotels we chose were very good. The desert tents were lovely and charming, with private bathrooms and showers. Our hotel in the desert was the Nomad Palace, and it was wonderful in terms of location, food, staff, entertainment, and accommodations. The meals were also excellent. It's clear this company has experience because everything is well-organized and planned. As constructive criticism, I would suggest providing a speaker or microphone for the guide/driver in the van because those sitting in the back row can't hear the guide's explanations due to being too far away. Mohammed, our guide, repeated his explanations without any problem... but it's an issue that needs improvement.Published on TripAdvisor![]()

From Fez to the desertWe decided to take a trip with friends to explore Morocco. We took the advice of Ismael, our guide, who planned the trip according to our preferences. We started in Marrakech, where he gave us a guided tour of the city, and afterwards we had free time which we used to go to the souk and try different food stalls. The next day we headed towards the desert, stopping along the way to visit Ouarzazate, Dades, the Todra Gorge, and more. In the desert, we did several activities: quad biking, visiting markets, watching sunsets, visiting nomads—in short, we loved it. We plan to repeat the experience to continue exploring Morocco, and we'll definitely do it again with ViajesDesierto, an experience we highly recommend to everyone.Published on TripAdvisor![]()

We took the desert tour for three days and I have nothing but positive things to say. Our guide was Ahmed, and from the very first moment he made sure we were comfortable and told us everything we needed to know about the places we were going to. Thanks to him, the trip was very enjoyable and fun. He's a really great guy. The desert was an incredible experience. We went on a camel trek and rode quad bikes to see the sunrise; it was one of the best experiences of our lives. If we go back, or if someone we know is interested in doing this tour, we will definitely recommend doing it with this agency and especially with Ahmed.Published on Google![]()

100% experience highly recommended!!A fantastic experience to share with friends, family, or even solo! All the activities were incredible: the many places we visited by car, the camel ride, the night in the desert, the sunrise while riding quad bikes… And above all, a special mention to our driver, Ahmed, who was such a great companion that for a few days it felt like he was traveling with us rather than guiding us. A wonderful person, always concerned about our comfort and safety, willing to share the experience with us as if he were one of the group, curious about our concerns, and eager to learn about us and our country, as well as show us his own. All this and much more made this a truly enriching experience for me and my friends. Highly recommended!Published on TripAdvisor![]()

Incredible experience with @viajesdesierto.com 🌵✨ Everything was super well organized, the guides were friendly, and the scenery was like something out of a movie. AMy trip with ViajesDesierto.com was, honestly, one of the best experiences I've ever had. From the very first moment, the service was excellent: Mila and Ismael were attentive to every detail, answering all my questions and tailoring the itinerary exactly to what I was looking for. During the trip, everything was perfectly organized: the transfers, the riads, the desert camp—even the schedules were perfect! The drivers and guides spoke Spanish, were friendly, and shared so much about Berber culture and desert life, which made the experience much more authentic. The most magical moment was undoubtedly the night in the desert, under a sky full of stars, with music, a campfire, and an unforgettable silence. I felt it wasn't just a trip, but a human and cultural adventure.Published on Google![]()

Meeting Ahmed has been the best part of the trip!We met Ahmed in Chefchaouen, at his shop in the medina. A wonderful place filled with objects that transport you to countless places and stories. But the best part, without a doubt, was meeting Ahmed and sitting down to chat with him. What a fantastic person! I'm already looking forward to going back and taking a trip to the desert, since we didn't have the chance this time. With all the things he told us, we can't wait to return and share a trip with him.Published on Google![]()

The experience was fantastic from the start. They picked us up at the airport, the service was excellent, and our driver, Ahmed, was the best. He went at our pace, catered to our requests for food, and took us wherever we wanted, without any rush. The experience was very good. The only slight inconvenience was that we had to pay in cash, and we didn't travel with cash. We were able to resolve this with a Western Union transfer. Otherwise, the experience was excellent.Published on Google![]()
